Strange thing! I could not find the list of HylaFAX status codes on the net. They are listed in the faxd/STATUS.txt file for convenience, but I think they ought to be findable by Google so here they are.
Note that each time HylaFAX sends an error, the message is included. So I guess most people don't really care that much. But it can be useful to know what's what... (when you're a programmer trying to get something done for your company...)
All the codes are 3 digits, 000 meaning that everything worked just fine (best code ever!) The codes are very similar to the FTP codes and other Internet protocol errors (heard of 404?)
Here we go!

You may get this Class 2 and 2.0 error (287, 288) whenever the receiving fax machine is a Class 1 machine.
Changing your modem to a Class 1 Fax/Modem will generally resolve the problem.
Another thing to look into is the baud rate. Reduce it to 19200 or less and try again.
Use the faxaddmodem command line as in:
sudo faxaddmodem ttyS0
Note that you should first stop your hylafax service since you're going to replace a resource that it is currently using.
Unless you know 100% what you are doing, you will not be able to change the data directly in the config.ttyS0 file. Really, there are many AT commands and a few other settings that change completely when you switch between Class 1 and Class 2.
You may want to keep a copy of your old settings as in:
cp /etc/hylafax/config.ttyS0 /etc/hylafax/config.ttyS0.class2
You will be able to switch between 2 or more settings, remember to stop and start your hylafax service as you do so. Also, make sure the queue is empty when switching if you expect the spooled faxes to be sent successfully with the old settings.
Modern fax machines recognize fax signals on a phone line. So, if you have a Fax/Modem in your computer and connect your regular fax machine to it, chances are your fax machine will pick up the signal and print the fax. If you are lucky the fax machine on the other side will also print the same document.
Check your fax machine, you may find a setting to turn off the auto-respond mechanism. But even putting the machine on Manual is generally not enough. You really need to tell the fax machine to not auto-detect a fax carrier and handshakes.
The only solution if you cannot do so is to connect your regular fax machine on a different phone line.
