feature

Thunderbird is so slow... it's nearly unusable!?

I have been using Thunderbird for a long time and yet I still did not know about the Compact feature.

A while back, i would use my Local Folders to save Junk, Draft, and Sent emails. This is really fast by default. But at some point I had a problem and reverted to using the remote folders which worked.

The problem was that Thunderbird would tell me that my Local Folders were full even though looking at them they were clearly empty.

The way this works is really annoyingly bad:

1. it accepts emails in a file, like the good old days, it uses one file for any number of emails

2. it adds new ...

MS-Access query sort not working

Looked around on how to sort out a report properly as it was sorting on the wrong field (actually at first it did not even look like it was sorted at all, but I did not notice that other field was indeed sorted!)

The sort in a Query Report form (opposed to just an SQL query) is defined by the Group & Sort feature and not the SQL results. Actually, you most certainly don't need it in the SQL because otherwise you'll be sorting twice.

It took me a while, but I'm glad I found the solution. All the documentation I searched only talked about the wrong methods: use the Query sort ...

Distributed compilation with Linux C++

I really want to try that feature! I have been using Incredibuild on MS-Windows and it can make a software compile 5 to 6 times faster. (i.e a software normally compiling in 1h compiles in 10 minutes!)

Under Linux some people worked on the C compiler front end to move the process to other machines as required. This is called distcc (i.e instead of using cc to compile, now you use distcc). This front end has a list of all the C compiler machines and uses them whenever possible.)

From what I can see on the front page, the setup should be a breeze (yeah... I know) and it does not even require ...

Just installed a PECL extension and Apache still doesn't understand it?!

Last night as I was compiling a new PECL extension for an install, after a while it worked... I could run php -v and it would give me the version of the PHP modules without telling me that the it couldn't load the extension (i.e. we already had the extension=http; in the php.ini file.)

But when testing with php -v on the command line, it would reload the php.ini and apply the extension feature and such.

However, when testing with Apache, it was still not working. The PECL installation was all correct, so why would it not see the resulting extensions?!

Because you need to restart Apache. ...

Ignoring .svn, CVS, *~, .o, ... in bash auto-complete

Ever wondered whether you could ask bash auto-complete to ignore some of your files?

You can with the FIGNORE feature and the bind feature:

export FIGNORE=CVS:\~:.o:.svn
bind 'set match-hidden-files off'

You had one or both of these lines to your .bashrc file and then the .svn and CVS folders won't be used anymore! Add all the extensions you don't like in there and you'll feel better soon!

Note: The \ in front of ~ is to avoid the bash expansion of that character.

Getting rid of the new Overlay Scrollbars (Invisible Scrollbar feature)

As I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.04, I got a bit of a surprise... many system windows started using a new type of scrollbar that is pretty much unusable (at least it slows down my production time on my desktop.)

Yes, these invisible scrollbars (which they call Overlay Scrollbar) are... invisible. Now you have to hover the mouse at the right place to get arrows that you can grab and move up and down. Oh! Did I say that you have to however in one place and these arrows, on purpose, appear AWAY from your mouse? This means you need to then move the mouse over those arrows before you can

Verifying the md5sum of Installed Debian or Ubuntu packages

I always wondered why we couldn't just use dpkg to verify that the installed packages have not be tempered with. I know that the feature is hardly safe if the md5's are saved on the same computer, even the same hard drive...

Still, once in a while it's just a manual error that requires me to check that I did do something wrong on my computer.

Under Red Hat the rpm packager offers the -V option: Verify.

Under Debian and thus Ubuntu and other derivatives, the debsums tool has to be installed and used for that purpose.

  sudo apt-get install debsums
  debsums -s <package ...

Error: this.table.tBodies is undefined

Today I got this error which surprised me for a little while. I was pretty sure I had it before, but could not find a reference, so I decided to put it here for sure this time!

Error: this.table.tBodies is undefined
Source File: http://linux.m2osw.com/sites/all/modules/jquery_update/replace/tabledrag...
Line: 516

Whenever I create a table in Drupal and the elements can be sorted, I like to use the drupal_add_tabledrag() feature. This function first parameter is the name of the table to drag. I was totally sure I had it right but it just kept giving me that error, over and over again

My customer cannot edit pages?!

I created a website and handed it to a customer... without realizing that the customer could not edit the pages of his site.

He reported the problem and I was rather surprised since I had not installed any module that would protect the editing of pages based on a role... what could it be? I checked the Drupal permissions a couple times... he had the right to edit all the nodes, his own and anyone else's, hmmm...

I looked at the code to try to figure it out, and there is a call to the filter module: filter_access($node->format).

Yes! Of course! I had forgotten to add his role to the ...
