How to find fail2ban errors when logs/errors don't make it anywhere?

Today I noticed that my fail2ban wasn't running.

Looking into it, I could see that an error was happening on startup. This pretty much always mean that something's wrong in the configuration files.

sudo systemctl start fail2ban
Job for fail2ban.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status fail2ban.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

However, somehow, systemd would not show me the error with the status or checking the journal and it would not write anything to the /var/log/fail2ban.log file which stayed ...

My syslog was filled up with errors such as this one:

    Sep 27 00:58:42 halk postfix/error[16751]: 628254C02F0: to=<mo_fax@m2osw.com>,

I've been wordering for a while, since I can use Thunderbird with a direct connection to my server, I was not too concerned, but tonight I really needed to support those emails because I have work to do that requires it.

HylaFAX Status Codes (STATUSCODE numbers explained!)

Strange thing! I could not find the list of HylaFAX status codes on the net (remember that HylaFAX is used to send facsimile.) They are listed in the faxd/STATUS.txt file for convenience, but I think they ought to be findable by Google so here they are.

Note that each time HylaFAX sends an error, the message is included. So I guess most people don't really care that much. But it can be useful to know what's what... (when you're a programmer trying to get something done for your company...)

All the codes are 3 digits, 000 meaning that everything worked just fine (best code ever!) The codes are very similar to the FTP codes and other Internet protocol errors (heard of 404?)

Hide sub-folders with Subversion

It is often that I want to hide a sub-folder so whenever I do an svn status I don't actually see that sub-folder in my list of files that are not available in the repository. It is otherwise quite annoying to see that folder again and again.

The command to do so uses a property on the parent folder as follow:

SVN and executables

One of the annoying thing with Subversion (SVN) is that at times it will add a execute flags to your files and there does not seem to be a function to easily remove that execute flag.

Doing a chmod on your file and trying an update, status or commit does not work. One way is to (1) copy your file, (2) delete the file from your SVN, (3) re-add the file after you carefully changeed the mode with a "chmod 644" or something similar. But of course, that means you lose your history...

Testing ping.fm, quite a tool for marketers!

I actually remembered that ping.fm would do what I wanted to do and even better than the couple of things I tested before. It will broadcast everything everywhere. In a way, a bit scary!

There are 45 systems as of today (Jul 11, 2009) where your posts will automatically be posted.

And if you want to know, you will need a user key for everything to work. When logged in your ping.fm account, go to http://ping.fm/key

You key is a long string of letters and digits (for those in the known, it is called an md5sum)

Drupal Module installed but not installed?!

Last night I found a problematic module... Specifically, it was XML Sitemap, but I do not think it was specific to that module.

The problem? I lost the XML Sitemap menu. I could not access it at all. So I decided to run the update.php code to see whether that would wake it up. Did not work. Then I tried going in the Modules list and disabling the modules. Did not work! Wow! I could not disable these modules!!! How weird...

No AfterUpdate event on Check Boxes in MS-Access?!

Symptoms

  1. My checkbox does not have an AfterUpdate event
  2. When running, I cannot de-select that check box once selected

Discovery Process to Solution

In MS-Access, you often want to run an action after the user changed something in a form.

Sensors

For a long time now I've been looking for a way to check out the temperature of my computer while Linux is running. I had heard about ways to do it but never actually knew how to make it work.

After quite some research, I found a tool used to show all sorts of status on your computer. The author said something about the temperature of the processors and thus I read on. I downloaded the lastest version. Compiled it and got lucky (i.e. it worked right away!). I started it and... hmmm... no temperature.

Secure Socket Layer, this is a protocol used to transmit secure data between two computers. Both computers will first agree on an encryption secret code, then all the data sent back and forth will be encoded using that code. In order to make it secure, you generate two set of numbers (called keys) one that is public and one that is private. The public key sole purpose is to encrypt the data. The private key sole purpose is to decrypt the data.
