How to setup a Linux firewall

Introduction

If you setup a Linux box, you want to setup a firewall before you connect your computer to the Internet. If you are setting up a remote server, it should only have the SSH port open. Connect to it, setup the fire, then only install the other servers and open ports as required (and only ports that need to be connected from the outside.)

Any port that you open without the firewall already setup is at risk. You may want to install PHP and along will come a database which may open a port to the Internet. Something that you just don't want to happen.

SANE cannot find any scanners

As I upgrade to 13.10 of Ubuntu, I'm having to do work to get my system back to normal...

Today I stumble on the fact that USB ports are now not accessible by everyone by default. So when I tried to scan a document, it told me that I had no scanner. Panic... and then I found out that the permissions were changed, widely, so only users who are root (by default) can access the scanner.

I changed the group to a group I'm in and it worked without having to reboot or relog in. However, it is not unlikely that the group won't stick... TBD!

Actions in Drupal, or should I say Rules?

I spent hours today to find this one module: Rules.

In most cases, you can set up a rule in Drupal with their Actions and Triggers and it will work just fine. The fact is that these options are extremely limited if you want any kind of condition on the Rule before triggering the action.

The idea is very simple:

1. Something happens

2. Check whether it is of interest1

3. Trigger the action

I needed that functionality for a couple of websites because I wanted to get an event whenever someone created a new page, but not for any type of ...

Variables and Functions in VBA not like in C++!

I have been writing C/C++ code for... well... over 10 years.

I'm always surprised when I use another language and some basic rules are completely different.

FTP not working?!

Well... I knew that a firewall could generate a few problems, but this one, I did not expect!

I just could not FTP anything from my FedoraCore box. I checked the source system firewall, tweaked all sorts of options in the vsftpd.conf file to no aval.

The error I was getting was this:

  • FCKeditor

Javascript based text editor offering features similar to MS-Word and other such text editors.

  • Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the browser offered by Microsoft to browse your file system and the Internet. It is based on the old free software called Mosaic. Now it is borrowing parts of other free software such as Konqueror. It first used Visual Basic as a language, now it supports Javascript very well too. It was a great browser in competition with Netscape 5.x from the start (trying to undermine the company named Netscape.)
