[ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

As I was working on a MS-Windows installation, I ran in this weird error: Data source not found and no default driver specified...

This was output when I was running the following in a command line prompt:

osql -E

The result should have been an MSSQL prompt instead!

The problem on the computer was that I uninstalled MSSQL 2005 that was automatically installed by Visual Studio C++ and was not compatible with our application, so I first uninstalled that but that uninstallation is really not proper. It leaves a LOT of things behind.

After that I installed MSSQL 2014 which was reported as ...

Using non-default private key for Launchpad

As I was looking around for the way to specify the correct key for launchpad, I could not find it. Luckily the ssh process is running when it asks for the passphrase so I could see the URL used to access the launchpad server from Bazaar. It is:

bazaar.launchpad.net

The address is not visible by default because you use the lp: protocol instead of a full URI to access launchpad.

  Host bazaar.launchpad.net
    HostName bazaar.launchpad.net
    User <your launchpad username>
    PasswordAuthentication no
    HostbasedAuthentication no
    IdentitiesOnly yes
    IdentityFile ...

Apache log says: client denied by server configuration

I work with Apache a lot. It is a really good web server that has many options and features. Unfortunately, maybe it has too many of them!

I ran in a problem where a notification from one server to another would fail with the following error:

[Fri Oct 11 19:43:50 2013] [error] [client 162.226.130.121] client denied by server configuration: <path to file>

Looking at the error, I was first thinking that my script was generating the error. The fact is that my script does not generate error 403. It has a 400 and 500 but not 403.

So looking at the error I thought, maybe that's an ...

WNetAddConnection2 function, how to

Introduction

I just faught for a few hours trying to get the WNetAddConnection2() to work in my program and found out two things that I did not see explained anywhere in the documentation...

Folder that Works

I'm not too sure whether that's a new thing at the company I worked in to implement this function or whether that's every time, although I've seen other posts on the Internet with the same sort of path so I would imagine that this is a "normal" Microsoft network feature.

The fact is that to connect you have to use the name of the server followed by some ...

Drupal blocks all disappeared!

Today I had an interesting experience... all of a sudden, all the blocks of a given theme disappeared.

It has been working just fine for months, so I really wasn't sure what the heck it could be.

The fact was that the theme was called the same as the module (as I work for a given client, I tend to do that...)

At some point, I must have added a function with a specific name and that would influence the theme. The result being blocks going bye bye!

I checked and the block content is computed just fine, the problem is the theme('block', $block) call. Although the ...

Drupal paths that won't work!

As I created a new site to list all of my accounts on the Internet, I thought the folder where those accounts appear should be called profiles. But somehow autopath did not generate the URL Alias as expected.

http://www.alexiswilke.me/profiles/

I tried several times and each time it returned an empty alias. Then I tried adding the alias by hand and that was accepted by Drupal, but when I then tried to go to that page it failed with an Apache error which at first I found odd. Then I recalled that there was a folder named profiles in the top directory of Drupal. The Drupal code (from the

Writing a CRON job in /etc/cron.*/job

Setup

When writing a CRON job script that you want to install under /etc/cron.*/job-name you must remember to apply the following steps:

1. Write the script and test it as root

2. Make sure to give it execution permission, usually 755

3. The ownership is expected to be root:root

4. The filename cannot include a period or the file it completely ignored

5. The script MUST start with #!/bin/sh or an equivalent (i.e. #!/bin/bash works too.)

6. Use full paths for most everything1

  • 1. Remember that the cron environment is minimal, you generally will have PATH defined and not much

Where are the network connections on Windows 7?! (for static IP addresses)

I don't know about you, but on my end I like to use static IP addresses on my Intranet.

But under Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft have done an incredibly good job at hiding the network connections to make sure you don't temper with them.

The path is as follow:

        Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

Once you are in there, you can use the right mouse button to get to the usual MS-Windows settings (The one where you can click on IPv6 or IPv4 and setup the IP to static.)

Insecure $ENV{PATH} ...

Today, I was trying to run psql from a program when I got this error:

Insecure $ENV{PATH} while running setuid at ...

At first, I thought that psql would be testing something about the user, but in fact, psql is a perl script that runs in secure mode. In other words, this applies to any tool written in perl.

The perl interpreter makes sure that the current user identifier is the same as the effective user identifier. When there is a mismatch, the interpreter breaks with that error.

SSH authorized_keys features

Pretty much every day I learn something... Today it will be the fact that you can enter variables in front of a key that will request the SSH deamon to verify a certain number of facts in regard to the connection being made.

For instance, it can automatically test that the IP address of the person connecting is a specific IP (if you have a static IP address, very practical!)
