Assembly Language on MS-Windows and PE / COFF Browser

As I was looking for a COFF Browser today (a tool that would show me the internals of a DLL or EXE file) I stumbled upon a page talking about Assembly Language and the GoAsm tools.

The page is here: [page was removed]

Interestingly enough, he has a link to an advanced assembler called GoAsm. This is specifically for MS-Windows and they do not release the source code of the assembler (at least, not that I can see...) But it is still interesting to see such tool suite around. 8-)

local delete, incoming edit upon update

Today I tried to move an SVN folder to another.

In my first attempt, I tried to copy the folder to a sub-folder that was not in SVN. The result is that the move failed, but nothing seemed to change in the SVN environment.

So I tried again, this time making sure that the destination folder would be an SVN folder.

The second time, however, it failed. The move instruction reported a conflict... Then the svn commit would not work. The SVN system was thinking that I changed something with the first svn mv as the failure did not clear the conflict.

svn mv a tmp/a-1.x # fails saying tmp/ ...

How to configure alternative soft-links under Ubuntu/Debian

Ubuntu (and Debian) come with many "alternatives".

The system offers many editors, browsers, compilers, shells, etc. Just have a look at the large selection under /etc/alternatives.

ls /etc/alternatives

Under Unix, one can create soft links to soft links to soft links to an actual file. The alternatives work in that way. The soft links defined in the /etc/alternatives folder are pointers that one can change to make his/her system more likeable.

To change one of these alternatives, Ubuntu offers the update-alternatives script. For example, if you don't like Nano, change your

Epson 1260 (and others) and Linux

As I started using my Epson 1260 Photo scanner on my Linux box, I got some problems...

The first scan works perfectly, and then on the second and following weird colors start appearing. Usually it is red or green, some sort of a gradient. At times half the page is like that, at times more, at times it's like a gradient...

Searching, some people said that the iscan driver was bad. Not true. The driver works perfectly.

Not too sure where the problem really is, looks like the buffer used to read the data is not correctly cleared before we read the next image. That is, in the video tool I ...

Flash to play stream audio

I create this page to talk about the work I've done to create a small Flash animation (under 1Kb) used to play a stream of audio (most specifically, from the radio Hotmix 106.)

MS-Access not limiting unbound text fields

When creating an unbound text in MS-Access it is not constrained in length. The text limit you get when the field is bound to the database table is really neat, but there is not direct way to access that code (it's probably something hard coded in the MS-Access system.)

This means you have to re-implement the behavior.

I found this page Unbound text box: limiting entry length which has a very good solution. Just in case the page disappears, there is what I use (a simplified version that doesn't manage errors because I do not like that — errors are not supposed to happen, when they do,

QWidget not appearing without a Layout

I got a problem with Qt that took me a whole day to fix!

I created a widget with many children. At first I used the QVBoxLayout and QHBoxLayout to lay out the child buttons in a grid like layout without paying much attention to the details. This was not too bad except that somehow the system picked up the smallest possible size for each button. Once I put a minimum size, it was better, but still not giving me much control in comparison to the specification for my project.

So at that point I looked around to learn how to create your own layout. Got the idea to look at the existing layout

ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88178 -- not working with default module

My Story

First of all, if I got this device it is because my two integrated NIC Card on my P55A-UD4P died. One of them does not even light up. Completely dead! When connected to my modem, the light on the modem doesn't come up either. Weird! That's the first NIC that broke on me like this. I plugged my cable in the other NIC, just in case, and the light came up. Hurra? Not really. Ain't working either. It connects, but when trying to send a ping, it goes really fast meaning that the hardware doesn't know what's happening and is most certainly generating a flood of interrupts. Just in

Attack by Bots

Since the ZmEu attack, I've been watching my logs a little closer. I also found a page that I could not read (but Google could and was kind enough to provide a cached version.) That page listed many bots that are not nice bots. So? I decided to block some of them, especially those that use very bad URLs or load many pages too quickly.

The result is that I'm getting more and IP addresses in my firewall. Although they get removed in a schedule that I will not state here, I can tell you that each time I block tenth when not hundredth of useless hits (worst than that at times those could be

Older Internet Explorer (v7 and older) background leakage...

I worked on a site a week ago or so and checked it with IE 8 but not IE 7...

The customer then contacted me saying that some images were "completely" off. (about 30 pixels)

The image being off was actually centered. IE 7 and older does NOT properly reset the text-align CSS settings. So the parent setting leaks in the children instead of the chidren using the default as they should. So that one was easy, I just added a text-align: left; in the next <div> statement and got that to work right!
