Wordpress 2017 -- how do you get a summary in your Category and other lists?

I now also work on a Worpress website with theme 2017 (twentyseventeen) and I noticed that when I go to the Caegories or some other list of posts, I get the full posts.

Looking into it, I could not really see anything about it on the Internet. Strange.

The fact is that all you have to do is go back to each post (yeah, a tad bit tedious if you have hundreds already) and add the "Read more mark". The fact is that Wordpress does not seem to automatically add a feature to automatically calculte the summary of your posts. Maybe I missed it or I would need to install yet another plugin.. ...

REST hook trigger needs a polling url (ZSE007)

As I'm working on a Zap application (see Zapier). I got this error about my triggers:

REST hook trigger needs a polling url (ZSE007)

So... I understand that they want to have a URL to do a poll and they even have documentation that explains why they want to poll in case of a REST hook Zap: Whenever the user wants to test the Zap, the application will get some data using the polling method. That way they can get that data specifically for one test and not force you to generate an trigger. One problem with testing with an actual trigger is that any other Zap listening to the same trigger ...

tar: .../public_html/wp-content: file changed as we read it

I created a little script to generate a daily tarball as a backup of a customer website.

Everyday, though, I would get the following error:

tar: .../public_html/wp-content: file changed as we read it

As you can see, the website is using Wordpress.

The error, though, I could not replicate when I would run the tar command by hand. What gives?

Looking closer into it, I noticed that my crontab setup would actually run the cron.php at the same time as the backup would run:

# m h  dom mon dow   command
  0 3  *   *   *     /.../backups/backup.sh

*/10 * *   *   *     cd /.../public_html ...

My Embedded YouTube Video Disappeared

Embedded videos from YouTube.com used to work just fine on my website.

Today, though, I just noticed that my video was not showing up on one of my pages. Looking into it, I found out that the problem was the protocol.

I'm not too sure whether it was my browser or YouTube,com (although I'm not too sure how YouTube.com would know...) but the fact is that the iframe source was using HTTP and the page I was viewing used HTTPS.

By editing the page and changing the YouTube.com video from HTTP to HTTPS resolved the issue. It is generally much better to always use encryption anyway.

SugarCRM Community Edition for Ubuntu 16.04 with PHP 7

As I wanted to use SugarCRM on my new server, I looked into the Community Edition and apparently the company is not willing to convert their code so it works under PHP 7.

So that would not work on a newer system because the code uses quite a few forbidden mechanism (wrong class definitions, old defunct functions...) and that prevents to even instal the system on your machine.

Now, I have looked closer into it and I am getting a version that works pretty darn well already. I still have some issues here and there, but I think you can already make use of that version. Except for one thing which ...

Boot into the command line console in Ubuntu 16.04

As I just upgraded my 14.04 installation to 16.04, it booted right up to lightdm.

I had it properly setup to boot in a console before, but somehow it changed the behavior on me.

This is because the computer is now using systemd to boot.

I already had the GRUB variables setup as expected:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="text"
GRUB_TERMINAL=console

But this is not enough if you want to start in the console when running systemd (which is running since 15.04).

systemd has a list of variables you can tweak using the systemctl command. To boot in ...

Bad move for PHP unpack()! So unpack() stopped working?

Today I noticed many errors on one of my websites. Looking closer into it, I noticed that the code for the mo_references Drupal module stopped working.

It took me some time, especially because the code seemed to work just fine as all the files could easily be displayed.

Actually, that was not the case. The unpack() character 'a', which I used, was transformed from a simple string that gets trimmed, to all the characters, including the NULL characters. Ouch! Now we have to use the 'Z' character instead.

I use it to unpack() a tar file by loading 512 bytes of data in a ...

My JavaScript code does not get the correct widget size, why?

As I am developing a set of pages for a customer, I ran in an intersting problem: my JavaScript function could not properly define the sizes of a box.

That box is heavily tweaked with the CSS assigned to it, as well as all of its neighbors. So I thought that may have something to do with it.

What I hadn't realized so far is that the ready() function of jQuery() is called once the script that includes it is ready (as in loaded) and not once the document as a whole is ready (done loading, i.e. onload event.)

With that knowledge it was easy to understand that I was actually finding myself ...

Postfix says it does not allow relaying?!

As we are upgrading our server to jump from version 12.04 to 13.04, we encounter a few problems.

Two with Postfix, first the Postgrey port has changed. It was 60000 before, now it is 10023. Don't ask me... Anyway, that was the easy one.

The other problem was a relay error. I could send emails all I wanted, but not my partner who does not show his server as part of our Made to Order Software Corp. network. Relay is why a computer allows emails from server X to be sent to server Y through server Z. You are server Z, that's the relay.

The fact is that if you can log in your account on ...

MS-Access: Application-defined or object defined error

Today I got this weird error: Application-defined or object defined error.

Looking into it, I could not find the right answer.

The failing code was in a sub-form and when called it generated the error immediately. The code I wrote was:

Parent.NewSelection

And of course, in the parent I had the NewSelection function defined:

Private Sub NewSelection
    DoSomething
End Sub

The DoSomething would update a button as required...

For real MS-Access pros, you may already have noticed what the problem was. What's really annoying is that the error we get is not capable of telling ...
