Why would Windows 8 lose my WiFi connection all the time?

The laptop I use runs MS-Windows 8.1, because a few software I have only run on that platform... It uses the WiFi to connect to my LAN. This is how I access the Internet, too.

Only once in a while (very often, if you ask me!), my WiFi would go out. This started to happen more or less when I switched from AT&T to Comcast. I did not really see what could possibly be different and all my other computers would continue to work just fine, including those used with WiFi too.

Many people say that your WiFi is bad or that you should change your WiFi Router... Or maybe when the laptop goes ...

Why would Windows 10 Wifi say "Limited" instead of "Connected"?

When I installed Flash, it automatically installed McAfee, the anti-virus, and really, I have not seen an option to NOT install that wonderful free tool which annoys me (and probably many others) a lot...

Not knowing, I then searched for a little while, why is it that my Wifi connection says "Limited" instead of "Connected". This is because McAfee replaces the MS-Windows firewall with their own stuff. That stuff limits the connections and everything will not go through, hence the Limited information on my Wifi connection.

Since I removed McAfee, my connection remains and ...

Old Synergy 64bit version for windows compatible with Ubuntu synergy package version 1.4.12

As I like to have Synergy working on my Windows boxes (i.e. laptops), I am saving a copy of the installer 64 bit version which works fine with WinXP and Win7. I'm about to test it with Win10 which is likely to accept it as is too. Just in case you did not know, Synergy is a driver that takes one mouse device and makes it work on multiple computers. In other words, you can use any number of computers with one mouse and one keyboard. Move the mouse to the right computer and you can use the keyboard on that computer. No need for a KVM anymore (Keyboard Video Mouse device that allowed you to ...

Recover name of message registered with RegisterWindowMessage()

Today I was confronted with an error in a process that would run in the background and slowly fill up the Windows message queue when it should have been dormant.

I looked at the messages that were being processed once the process woke up and the message number was 0xC10C or so. Nothing in the software has such a number. So I looked around and found out that the message was one of those created using the RegisterWindowMessage() function. (This is wrong in that application since the messages are never used from external applications, but oh well... that does not change the basic problem.)

So, ...

not enough actual parameters for macro min() or max()

As I was porting wpkg to Windows so it would compile under Microsoft IDE version 10, I ran in a problem with variables named min and max. Windows wanted to see them as the min(a,b) and max(a,b) macros.

That started happening when I included Windows.h which I needed for handling files (CreateFileA, CloseHandle, etc.).

Since these are macros, i.e. defined with #define ..., they take priority over anything in your C++ code (since that's handled with your preprocessor.)

One way to get rid of them is to undefine those macros after the #include, something like this:

#include ...

New Ubuntu Desktop: Unity How To

I love Linux and use Ubuntu, but all of a sudden you don't have support for Gnome. Instead they now force you to use Unity. It's probably a good idea to go with the flow because trying to maintain Gnome is probably a hell of a lot of work so...

Losing your settings all the time? Check out When I lose gnome settings...

I have to have a few things in my window system:

1) Menus MUST be attached to the window I'm using. I don't like the Macintosh way. Sorry. To remove the menus from the top, run the following command:

sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt

Qt and DLL mismatch / error

My Story

I'm using Qt under Linux and MS-Windows.

When I started with MS-Windows, I could not run the Release version. I thought the problem was because I was using a pre-compiled version of Qt 4.6.x and let it go for a while.

At some point, I finally upgraded to Qt 4.7.x thinking that would clear off that Release problem.

This time around, I actually compiled the library, see instructions here:

  Compile Qt 4.7.x with Visual Studio 10 (VC++ 2010)

The result was that a few bugs I noticed while running with 4.6.x were gone. Nice. However, I still couldn't run with the release version. Why would that be?

Binary (Hexa) File Editor for Windows

Got an email from today and they mentioned a new binary editor that works under MS-Windows.

Yes, they have one in DevStudio, but it's cumbersome to open a file in that more. You have to go through hoops and it often changes a tiny bit between versions and even just installs!

This one's small and fast and works on large files too.

It's called Frhed.

Network connections

This morning I was attacked by a robot. I quickly noticed that my websites were slow and saw a pretty large amount of traffic on port 80: 208 connections!

tcp 441 0 ESTABLISHED

Where are the network connections on Windows 7?! (for static IP addresses)

I don't know about you, but on my end I like to use static IP addresses on my Intranet.

But under Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft have done an incredibly good job at hiding the network connections to make sure you don't temper with them.

The path is as follow:

        Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

Once you are in there, you can use the right mouse button to get to the usual MS-Windows settings (The one where you can click on IPv6 or IPv4 and setup the IP to static.)
