My title, test #7

Hmmm... Okay... so Facebook has a latency, but ping.fm does not seem to take anything in account!?

I'm wondering whether ping.fm checks the PTR (whatever that is, hey?!) and if incorrect, refuses to forward the post. That would make sense since the PTR is 99% of the time wrong when spammers send emails.

Well! Today it worked 8-) After more than 7 tests because I did not always increment that number, but still. That's good. I'm moving forward. More soon!

MS-Access: INSERT INTO syntax error

Today I was creating a report and created a table with a column named 'Group'. It looked like it worked just fine so I moved on with it.

Then, at the point I wanted to insert data with a simple INSERT INTO ... statement, it broke. The statement would generate a syntax error. Yes. The simple answer is that GROUP is viewed as a keyword and thus when used as a field name it needs to be escaped (i.e. written between backward quotes: `...`). Not liking the need to escape a field name each time I use it, I just renamed the field which is even better.

QODBC and update of table lines

Today I bumped in another problem.

Some QuickBooks tables cannot properly be updated with QODBC. In my case it was the SalesOrderLine table. The first error I got was:

Error parsing complete XML return string (8)

I just couldn't be sure what that meant...

I had looked at the XML output closely and noticed that the identifier of a line was improperly shown in a separate tag.

The fact is, I just could not update multiple lines with FQSaveToCache flag set to 1.

Failing INSERT INTO without errors

Story

Inserting a row ina database is done with the INSERT INTO command line. This is quite standard SQL.

MS-Access supports the INSERT INTO instruction too. You can write macros that make use of it.

I have used it for a while and had not problems. But yesterday I discovered that there was a case when it simply wouldn't work at all. The strangest thing was that it did not work with an MS-Access database without any one error. No error at all.

QuickBooks and the Invalid Date error!

In my work with MS-Access and QuickBooks, I'm slowly progressing toward incredebilitiousness (some Franglais as we say in French).

I was working on adding Items to the ItemInventory table. All you have to do is an INSERT or an UPDATE.

  • SSL

Secure Socket Layer, this is a protocol used to transmit secure data between two computers. Both computers will first agree on an encryption secret code, then all the data sent back and forth will be encoded using that code. In order to make it secure, you generate two set of numbers (called keys) one that is public and one that is private. The public key sole purpose is to encrypt the data. The private key sole purpose is to decrypt the data.

CVS is a control source tool that has been used for a quite long time. It uses RCS as its bottom layer (RCS is limited to a single computer environment.) Each time the source code is checked in with a diff so one can always retrieve a previous version. CVS is often being replaced with SVN.
