Older Internet Explorer (v7 and older) background leakage...

I worked on a site a week ago or so and checked it with IE 8 but not IE 7...

The customer then contacted me saying that some images were "completely" off. (about 30 pixels)

The image being off was actually centered. IE 7 and older does NOT properly reset the text-align CSS settings. So the parent setting leaks in the children instead of the chidren using the default as they should. So that one was easy, I just added a text-align: left; in the next <div> statement and got that to work right!

Time Machine... To go back in time with a click!

A long time ago, I got http://www.m2osw.com ... and I created a website (you know a 1.0 kind of a website.) It look like an abomination, and I would have prefered to lose it...

Well... there are time machines that are not perfect but will show you some of the pages of my company's website from way back (it started in 2001).

And, please, don't laff! Okay... whatever... Hey! Stop it! Or write a comment below, I'd like your input...

My customer cannot edit pages?!

I created a website and handed it to a customer... without realizing that the customer could not edit the pages of his site.

He reported the problem and I was rather surprised since I had not installed any module that would protect the editing of pages based on a role... what could it be? I checked the Drupal permissions a couple times... he had the right to edit all the nodes, his own and anyone else's, hmmm...

I looked at the code to try to figure it out, and there is a call to the filter module: filter_access($node->format).

Yes! Of course! I had forgotten to add his role to the ...

Auto-Vacuum not working? (and solution)

Since I manage multiple computers and each run a PostgreSQL database system, I can see discrepancies between versions. (i.e. newer versions fix problems in older versions.)

Moving a website from one server to another

Moving a website to a new server

Now and again, you have to move a website from one server to another.

There are good and bad things about that, the main problem is with dynamic websites. Why is that? Simple: a dynamic website expects to access a database and if you hit the wrong server, that will go bad.

What's the best solution?

1. Install your website on the new server, make sure it loads okay (you may want to use a test sub-domain name to make sure, although that's not a rock solid proof since some things may use a fully qualified URL)

2. Change the IP address in your ...

Twittering without being in Twitter!

I was wondering whether I could twitter without having to add my posts to twitter each time...

That works, of course, but it is time consuming.

The website I'm using runs on Drupal and it includes a Twitter module. And that module will automatically twit my posts titles to twitter. There you go!

This message is a test to see whether that works...

Drupal Module installed but not installed?!

Last night I found a problematic module... Specifically, it was XML Sitemap, but I do not think it was specific to that module.

The problem? I lost the XML Sitemap menu. I could not access it at all. So I decided to run the update.php code to see whether that would wake it up. Did not work. Then I tried going in the Modules list and disabling the modules. Did not work! Wow! I could not disable these modules!!! How weird...
