stream_socket_client() fails with no errors...

Today I had a weird one.

The PHP function named stream_socket_client(), used to create a socket to communicate with another computer over a network, may return $errno = 0 and $errstr = "".

The PHP reference actually mentions the problem:

On failure the errno and errstr arguments will be populated with the actual system level error that occurred in the system-level connect() call. If the value returned in errno is 0 and the function returned FALSE, it is an indication that the error occurred before the connect() call. This is most likely due to a problem initializing the socket. ...

Setting the color of a cell in LibreOffice Calc depending on the cell value...

Introduction

This is not the first time I try to look into getting a color in a cell when the value of the cell is such and such, not just smaller than 0 and it becomes [RED]... which is a default available in your formula.

The fact is that you need to create styles that you're going to reference either with the STYLE() function or using the Conditional Formatting window.

So...

Creating New Styles and Formatting

First select a cell. You probably want to use an empty cell where you can enter a number or some text and then change it's format with the Format Cell... option. ...

Wordpress Twentyseventeen Theme Menu hidden by default!?!?

Screenshot of a Wordpress website with the problem fixed.I have a website where I use Wordpress as the CMS. It's good enough for  that website (frankly, unless you want a blog, it's rather limited to my point of view, but I'm crazy...)

In 2017, they created a theme called Twentyseventeen, which looks good and has most of the functionality I need. However, there is a huge bug:

The front page has a smartphone menu at the bottom of the page which opens HIDDEN. That's just plainly wrong. Either you put the menu at the top or you make sure that the menu gets shown, somehow.

Since I'm a programmer (at times I forget) I decided ...

Bottom bar animation depending on scroll position

Today I got a little challenge trying to get a bar at the bottom of the SMS From Me public pages.

I was thinking to use CSS to animate size. Already here there is a trick to know about. You cannot use the height (or width) parameter. However, you can use the max-height (max-width) to make the transition work as expected.

So my CSS transition included the following important parameters:

.bottom-bar
{
  padding: 0;
  margin: 0;
  position: fixed;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 0;
  right: 0;
  max-height: 0px; /* at the start, it is hidden */
  transition: max-height ...

REST hook trigger needs a polling url (ZSE007)

As I'm working on a Zap application (see Zapier). I got this error about my triggers:

REST hook trigger needs a polling url (ZSE007)

So... I understand that they want to have a URL to do a poll and they even have documentation that explains why they want to poll in case of a REST hook Zap: Whenever the user wants to test the Zap, the application will get some data using the polling method. That way they can get that data specifically for one test and not force you to generate an trigger. One problem with testing with an actual trigger is that any other Zap listening to the same trigger ...

Recover name of message registered with RegisterWindowMessage()

Today I was confronted with an error in a process that would run in the background and slowly fill up the Windows message queue when it should have been dormant.

I looked at the messages that were being processed once the process woke up and the message number was 0xC10C or so. Nothing in the software has such a number. So I looked around and found out that the message was one of those created using the RegisterWindowMessage() function. (This is wrong in that application since the messages are never used from external applications, but oh well... that does not change the basic problem.)

So, ...

Convert XML tags and text to a String

Today I started testing a lot of my JavaScript / jQuery code from a website I am building for a customer. I got an error, at some point, saying:

SCRIPT5007: Unable to get property 'replace' of undefined or null reference

The error was in link with the 'replace' function being referenced on an innerHTML of an element. More specifically, one of those XML element (probably the top most one.)

The fact is that Internet Explorer does not support innerHTML in an XML document. Not to be too surprised about that, XML is not HTML so there is really no reason why innerHTML should be ...

Display a line number in a table (i.e. subform of records)

I was ask by a customer to add line numbers to each entry in a table shown in an invoice.

The concept is pretty simple, but really, how do you do that properly in MS-Access?

Microsoft actually has a solution (see link below) and it comes down to writing a function that counts the number of items from that item's current position to the beginning of the table (i.e. going backward). It works, it is just really bad if you have very large invoices since it will tend to slow down as you start getting many items.

There is the function, we can see the counting in the do until near the end ...

Bad move for PHP unpack()! So unpack() stopped working?

Today I noticed many errors on one of my websites. Looking closer into it, I noticed that the code for the mo_references Drupal module stopped working.

It took me some time, especially because the code seemed to work just fine as all the files could easily be displayed.

Actually, that was not the case. The unpack() character 'a', which I used, was transformed from a simple string that gets trimmed, to all the characters, including the NULL characters. Ouch! Now we have to use the 'Z' character instead.

I use it to unpack() a tar file by loading 512 bytes of data in a ...

My JavaScript code does not get the correct widget size, why?

As I am developing a set of pages for a customer, I ran in an intersting problem: my JavaScript function could not properly define the sizes of a box.

That box is heavily tweaked with the CSS assigned to it, as well as all of its neighbors. So I thought that may have something to do with it.

What I hadn't realized so far is that the ready() function of jQuery() is called once the script that includes it is ready (as in loaded) and not once the document as a whole is ready (done loading, i.e. onload event.)

With that knowledge it was easy to understand that I was actually finding myself ...
