The Linux Page

cc

The Unix C compiler. This is an old language that started the frenzy of advanced C, C++ and C# languages. Many other languages are also based on C such as PHP, Java and Javascript.

Distributed compilation with Linux C++

I really want to try that feature! I have been using Incredibuild on MS-Windows and it can make a software compile 5 to 6 times faster. (i.e a software normally compiling in 1h compiles in 10 minutes!)

Under Linux some people worked on the C compiler front end to move the process to other machines as required. This is called distcc (i.e instead of using cc to compile, now you use distcc). This front end has a list of all the C compiler machines and uses them whenever possible.)

From what I can see on the front page, the setup should be a breeze (yeah... I know) and it does not even require ...

favicon

Have you seen animated icons in your tabs? This has been working for a while, with IE and FF and Co.

All you have to do is create an animated GIF file as your "favicon.ico", and it is better to name it .gif, by the way.

Because icons can now be pretty much any image format, not just .ico

And if you need some favicon for your site, check this one out: http://www.favicon.cc

Many of these are free!

Compile C/C++ files with weird extensions

cl.exe has a special option to be told that the input file is a C (/Tc) or a C++ (/Tp) file. This is necessary if you want to use an extension other than the default .c, .cxx and .cpp. For instance, many people use .cc or .c++ for C++ files. Just add the /Tp command line option and your file will be accepted as a C++ file no matter what the extension is.

Also, in your environment, you can change the editor and Open/Close feature to recognize these files. The Microsoft page available here:

  • Gb

    Giga bytes--these days, the common measure for memory and disk space. It changed in the last 20 years from Kb (Kilo bytes) to Mb (Mega bytes) and to Gb. With disks, we are close to Tb (Tera bytes) and some people talk about Pb (Peta bytes).
