Increasing the volume over 100% on Linux

I have been listening to many videos on YouTube, Facebook, etc. that have a really low volume. This is generally rather annoying since in the end I cannot hear a lot of the audio track.

There is actually a way to increase the volume over the normal 100% limit.

There are several features that offer such a feature, but the one that worked for me is a Volume Control application called pavucontrol.

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol
pavucontrol

It looks like various systems offer various ways to do that, but at least that one works for me under Linux in Ubuntu Unity.

MS-Access and Focus handling

MS-Access can be programmed with VBA which is neat. I do that a lot because the default forms do not allow you to strongly verify the data validity or even better: prevent you from editing certain record because they are too old, you don't have permissions, it was already archived in some way (i.e. invoice paid), etc.

However, I often encounter problems with the focus. The main thing I do to make it as safe as possible is show or hide buttons. If you cannot activate function A, then there is no point in having a button for function A. Instead, we should hide the function A button when we ...

MS-Access not limiting unbound text fields

When creating an unbound text in MS-Access it is not constrained in length. The text limit you get when the field is bound to the database table is really neat, but there is not direct way to access that code (it's probably something hard coded in the MS-Access system.)

This means you have to re-implement the behavior.

I found this page Unbound text box: limiting entry length which has a very good solution. Just in case the page disappears, there is what I use (a simplified version that doesn't manage errors because I do not like that — errors are not supposed to happen, when they do,

Where are the network connections on Windows 7?! (for static IP addresses)

I don't know about you, but on my end I like to use static IP addresses on my Intranet.

But under Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft have done an incredibly good job at hiding the network connections to make sure you don't temper with them.

The path is as follow:

        Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

Once you are in there, you can use the right mouse button to get to the usual MS-Windows settings (The one where you can click on IPv6 or IPv4 and setup the IP to static.)

Taking a Screenshot on Mac OS/X

In order to take a screenshot on your Mac OS/X system, simply type "Apple-Shift-3". Then you will see an image on your Desktop. As far as I know you cannot control where the image will go.

There are many other combinaisons that let you select the part of the screen you want a screenshot of.

The name of the file on your dekstop is "Picture #.png" where # increases as required. Although since 10.4 you can change the file format with a Unix command.

Associate & De-associate (or Un-associate) a label in MS-Access

Problem: Associate, easy! De-associate... but how?!

The association of a label with another widget is easy to obtain. You want to do that especially if you want to hide the widget or apply some similar effects to it so both, the widget and its label are affected. This is especially true if you hide the widget.

svn merge, How does it work?

Whenever I try to merge, which does not happen very often, with the SVN source control system (i.e. Subversion), I have to test 20 different ways before I finally find the right way.

Now, I'm writing the solution that works for me.

The command I have to use is:

svn merge -r N:M file:///path/to/svn/file /destination/path

The path to the SVN file is the same as what you would use to check out that specific folder (file).

Paris

I lived in Paris for a few years... on Villa Mannin that you can see below:

FTP not working?!

Well... I knew that a firewall could generate a few problems, but this one, I did not expect!

I just could not FTP anything from my FedoraCore box. I checked the source system firewall, tweaked all sorts of options in the vsftpd.conf file to no aval.

The error I was getting was this:

Force the download of any file

How to force a download of any file in a CGI script

I have been wondering for a while, now I have the answer, so I can share it with you guys.

Your script has to do the following steps:

  1. Print a header which at least includes:

    1. Content-Type: application/force-download

(you can also use octet-stream instead of force-download)
