Why would Windows 8 lose my WiFi connection all the time?

The laptop I use runs MS-Windows 8.1, because a few software I have only run on that platform... It uses the WiFi to connect to my LAN. This is how I access the Internet, too.

Only once in a while (very often, if you ask me!), my WiFi would go out. This started to happen more or less when I switched from AT&T to Comcast. I did not really see what could possibly be different and all my other computers would continue to work just fine, including those used with WiFi too.

Many people say that your WiFi is bad or that you should change your WiFi Router... Or maybe when the laptop goes ...

Supermicro X9SCI/X9SCA, video is gone!

As I am still trying to get my computers to work with a dual seat (or multiseat), I did an attempt in using the onboard video (a relatively decent Matrox card.) So I went in the BIOS and changed the setup for the video from Offboard to Onboard. Big mistake!

The video stopped working. On reboot the computer beeped 8 times and booted the OS normally (I have SSH setup so I could access the computer, but absolutely no video on either port: on board and off board.)

I have a Supermicro X9SCI/X9SCA. Searching for "no video" or "missing video on boot"... returned nothing ...

Using non-default private key for Launchpad

As I was looking around for the way to specify the correct key for launchpad, I could not find it. Luckily the ssh process is running when it asks for the passphrase so I could see the URL used to access the launchpad server from Bazaar. It is:

The address is not visible by default because you use the lp: protocol instead of a full URI to access launchpad.

    User <your launchpad username>
    PasswordAuthentication no
    HostbasedAuthentication no
    IdentitiesOnly yes
    IdentityFile ...

Readonly content cannot be changed. Libreoffice preventing edits...

Today I opened a document where I had to make a few edits and LibreOffice decided to tell me:

Readonly content cannot be changed.
No modifications will be accepted.

There is a screenshot of that message:

Error message: Readonly content cannot be changed. No modifications will be accepted.

The error may be justified, I do not know, but apparently not too many people know how to unlock a document. I found pages and pages that tell people to check the read/write protection of the file, as if a read-only file on disk could not be updated in the editor... (yes! you cannot write it back, but you can edit it and do a Save As ...)

One person, though, had the correct answer to ...

My NVG 510 broadband light is blinking red

Somehow my NVG 510 broadband light started blinking red a couple of time in the last few days. I've been wondering why and I think I have the answer now.

In most cases it may just be that the broadband signal disappears for too long and the modem disconnects.

However, in my case, I think it was because they made an upgrade (a push!) on the modem because a few things do not work as expected anymore. (i.e. I cannot access the nsh shell anymore...)

Whenever software is upgraded, the likelyhood that you have to reset the whole thing is very high. I had to restart twice and even after that, ...

Remote access to another MS-Windows computer

I have used several different software to gain remote access to other's computers.

With a Unix system, it's easy. You use ssh and you can do everything you want (although some people just cannot handle a console, I'm fine with such, but ssh allows you to access X-Windows if you'd like with the -X command line option.)

With MS-Windows, since that system is just a desktop application, you need a special tool in order to achieve that feat. Most of them are for money or make use of things that do not work under Linux. Yet, there is one that I like, it is called TeamViewer. It was ...

Removing the fold columns on the left gvim after using diffsplit

One thing that I find annoying in gvim is the foldcolumn parameter which is not reset once you are done with a diff process.

Of course, gVIM does not really know when you are done diff-ing, so its behavior makes sense... only it is still annoying.

To remove the fold (2 gray columns on the left used to hide areas that match in each file) you simply have to set the foldcolumn parameter to zero:

:set foldcolumn=0

Just in case, you enter a diff from within vim by loading two files, then using;

:diffsplit #

The diffsplit can specify any buffer number, I use the # as the other buffer (the ...

Forbidden -- client denied by server configuration

Working on a PHP application setup, I stumble upon a problem. Going to the installation page, I got the dreadful error:

You don't have permission to access <root-path>/admin/install on this server.

Looking at the error logs, the only thing reported was:

client denied by server configuration

The fact is that Apache does not tell you which setting actually forbids the access. I guess that's because once it gets checked by Apache, it is a blend of all the settings and not a tree being followed.

Looking a round, and since I already had that error not too long ...

Hacking my NVG510 device

Earlz found a way to hack the NVG510 device and wrote a page about it: Rooting The NVG510 from the WebUI

He also offers a page that one can use to allow telnet connections to the NVG510 (by default it is locked up.) From there you can allow ssh and tftp connections too.

Note that this means if you are logged in your NVG510 and you click on a link on a bad server, you could actually allow remote connections from anyone! So that's a dangerous back door, although if you are not logged in the Web interface, then it is fine (assuming you do not then log in without thinking!?)

Just in case ...

Multi-level lists in MS-Word... The new way!?

Okay, it has been a little while now, but each time I just have to search forever to find out how to create a multi-level numbering list.

By default, a list will appear as this:

1. Chapter

    1. Section

        1. Sub-Section

Which may work for you, but in many cases you want to have all the list numbers appearing in your section and sub-sections as in:

1. Chapter

    1.1 Section

        1.1.1 Sub-Section

Okay, so that in itself it actually very easy, but it used to be that you could ...
