List Open Files

This is a quick note so I can find the command I need to use to list open files.

My search will work this time.

lsof stands exactly for "LiSt Open Files"

That gives you a list of all the files opened by your system, process by process. It can be useful to know if you are developing a program or if you are limited in the number of files opened at once.

Drupal Module installed but not installed?!

Last night I found a problematic module... Specifically, it was XML Sitemap, but I do not think it was specific to that module.

The problem? I lost the XML Sitemap menu. I could not access it at all. So I decided to run the update.php code to see whether that would wake it up. Did not work. Then I tried going in the Modules list and disabling the modules. Did not work! Wow! I could not disable these modules!!! How weird...

Logos from Brands

Quite often, I write documents that require a logo from a brand such as Microsoft or Apple. Here I have link that take me to the pages were I can get the logos. The following are links to the logos of different companies I work with. If you have some, feel free to share! The list is in alphabetical order.

No AfterUpdate event on Check Boxes in MS-Access?!

Symptoms

  1. My checkbox does not have an AfterUpdate event
  2. When running, I cannot de-select that check box once selected

Discovery Process to Solution

In MS-Access, you often want to run an action after the user changed something in a form.

The Conduit Toolbar

Today I tried a new system. It lets you create a toolbar for your browser. One thing that impressed me was that it worked for Internet Explorer and FireFox and runs under MS-Windows and Mac OS/X, but also works beautifully under Linux!!!

Note that SeaMonkey will ask you whether you want to install that software and it will fail since it has some features like FireFox but the installation process is different.

Now, I like the bar for one reason: I can put RSS feeds in there and see it tick. Only problem there, it goes too fast.

PHP glob function does not return softlinks

I use all sorts of tricks in order to duplicate functionality without actually duplicating PHP code.

One of the main, easiest way under Unix is to create softlinks. First put all your code in one folder, then create a softlink to it. That gives you two paths:

Ubuntu Versions and Names

The following is a list of the Ubuntu versions with their name.

I find it really annoying when someone says "I have such" and he/she has no clue what version (i.e. 7.10) it is. Then I have to look it up because I don't memorize the numbers to the names, but I know what the numbers entitles.

So... I need a table and I had one on Wikipedia, but that was wiped out. So now, I'll keep my own here and I'll try to keep it up to date. I start with the version Mar 16, 2009 from the Ubuntu Release page. We can hope that they will maintain that page as they move forward though. It ...

InsertNode module for Drupal

This page is an extension to the InsertNode module available on Drupal.

I include here a set of files that one may be interested in to enhance the experience with that module.

If you have another file, let me know, and I might very well include it here (After reviewing the code!)

Thank you.

This file adds two prompts to help enter your [node: ... ] tag. This is based on Zewa's work.

Lists and using images as bullets

One thing we do with lists on a website is to put a small image to replace the default bullet with something that looks nice in the theme.

If you are still reading the documentation on how to place an image in a list to replace the default bullet and what you read is some talks about list-style-image then you are in the wrong direction. Of course, this works great with Mozilla. But Internet Explorer does not understand the concept of list-style-image at all.

Enhanced DLLs

Pre-Pre-Scriptum: Please, look for the edll library. It is now available as a free library for MinGW.

  • Internet

Inter-Network. The Internet was created at a University to attempt to connect computers between each others from "far away places" (i.e. two buildings in the same University). The main concept was to create a set of protocols to make the systems work. Namely, the SMTP, FTP and TELNET. Now we have many others such as the well known HTTP, which is based on the TELNET concept.
