Recover name of message registered with RegisterWindowMessage()

Today I was confronted with an error in a process that would run in the background and slowly fill up the Windows message queue when it should have been dormant.

I looked at the messages that were being processed once the process woke up and the message number was 0xC10C or so. Nothing in the software has such a number. So I looked around and found out that the message was one of those created using the RegisterWindowMessage() function. (This is wrong in that application since the messages are never used from external applications, but oh well... that does not change the basic problem.)

So, ...

[ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

As I was working on a MS-Windows installation, I ran in this weird error: Data source not found and no default driver specified...

This was output when I was running the following in a command line prompt:

osql -E

The result should have been an MSSQL prompt instead!

The problem on the computer was that I uninstalled MSSQL 2005 that was automatically installed by Visual Studio C++ and was not compatible with our application, so I first uninstalled that but that uninstallation is really not proper. It leaves a LOT of things behind.

After that I installed MSSQL 2014 which was reported as ...

Qt and DLL mismatch / error

My Story

I'm using Qt under Linux and MS-Windows.

When I started with MS-Windows, I could not run the Release version. I thought the problem was because I was using a pre-compiled version of Qt 4.6.x and let it go for a while.

At some point, I finally upgraded to Qt 4.7.x thinking that would clear off that Release problem.

This time around, I actually compiled the library, see instructions here:

  Compile Qt 4.7.x with Visual Studio 10 (VC++ 2010)

The result was that a few bugs I noticed while running with 4.6.x were gone. Nice. However, I still couldn't run with the release version. Why would that be?

Start an Ubuntu Gnome Application as Root from your Toolbar

When you use Ubuntu X11 you at times want to start an application as Root.

In your console you'd use the sudo tool which gives the command temporary super-user powers.

sudo my-command

In Ubuntu Gnome you can do the same using the gksu command. So add an icon, enter the usual information, and for your command, add gksu in front of it. When clicked, you'll first get a prompt asking you your sudo password, then the command is executed as if the root user had started it.

Apache misconfiguration: AddType versus AddEncoding

I've been using Drupal for a while and only now started to notice a problem with the cache of JavaScript code. In general, I don't cache the JS since they are not dynamic files. But we do that with Snap!.

The Apache mime module offers two options: AddType and AddEncoding

Both options are used in a similar way meaning that both react on file extensions. When a match is found, the corresponding MIME type or content encoding is attached to the content being sent.

If you install the MIME module, it will attempt encode data properly for the most general case, but not all cases. That is, it does

The application was unable to start correctly (0xC0150002). Click OK to close the application.

On MS-Windows, you get really strange errors and at times some of those errors are difficult to fix.

Sams Teach Yourself C++The error 0xC0150002 means that a DLL could not be loaded and thus the software could not get started since a piece of it was missing. The only solution is to "close the application" (since it wasn't really started, closing it sounds a bit funny here.)

There are several ways to find out about the problem. In Visual Studio, the output should tell you what is happening and that a library could not be loaded. However, many times, low level libraries will not be displayed in the ...

Register an application so it automatically starts on reboot

Always wondered how they automatically restart an application after a reboot under MS-Windows?

There is a function named RegisterApplicationRestart() that does just that.

There are flags to tell when your application should be started or under which circumstances.

For instance, you can start only if something crashed the OS.

The doc is here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373347.aspx

Force the download of any file

How to force a download of any file in a CGI script

I have been wondering for a while, now I have the answer, so I can share it with you guys.

Your script has to do the following steps:

  1. Print a header which at least includes:

    1. Content-Type: application/force-download

(you can also use octet-stream instead of force-download)
