  • As I upgrade to 13.10 of Ubuntu, I'm having to do work to get my system back to normal...

Today I stumble on the fact that USB ports are now not accessible by everyone by default. So when I tried to scan a document, it told me that I had no scanner. Panic... and then I found out that the permissions were changed, widely, so only users who are root (by default) can access the scanner.

I changed the group to a group I'm in and it worked without having to reboot or relog in. However, it is not unlikely that the group won't stick... TBD!

To find the USB port that has your scanner, ...

  • For a long time now I've been looking for a way to check out the temperature of my computer while Linux is running. I had heard about ways to do it but never actually knew how to make it work.

After quite some research, I found a tool used to show all sorts of status on your computer. The author said something about the temperature of the processors and thus I read on. I downloaded the lastest version. Compiled it and got lucky (i.e. it worked right away!). I started it and... hmmm... no temperature.

  • If you are using a folder much, then you can create a substitute using the subst command in a shell. This command will assign a path to the given letter and the result is something which looks like you had an additional hard drive.

  • The Error: pivot_root not found

Debian or Ubuntu and pivot_root and GRUB and hard drives... In general, I like Linux, but once in a while, it generates quite a few problems!

  • IMPORTANT NOTE

These are instructions for Ubuntu 10.10 and these worked in Ubuntu 12.10 (which I have now). It may break in the future though.

I generally install my Ubuntu systems using the Server version of Ubuntu because it tends to works a lot better. The result is that I don't get all the Desktop features installed by the installer. That prevents me from installing the NVidia driver automatically.

The newest drives for X.org make use of some source for the client-side driver and that requires you to install the linux source code and headers. I'm wondering if each time we ...

  • I don't know about you, but on my end I like to use static IP addresses on my Intranet.

But under Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft have done an incredibly good job at hiding the network connections to make sure you don't temper with them.

    The path is as follow:

            Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

Once you are in there, you can use the right mouse button to get to the usual MS-Windows settings (The one where you can click on IPv6 or IPv4 and setup the IP to static.)

  • The laptop I use runs MS-Windows 8.1, because a few software I have only run on that platform... It uses the WiFi to connect to my LAN. This is how I access the Internet, too.

Only once in a while (very often, if you ask me!), my WiFi would go out. This started to happen more or less when I switched from AT&T to Comcast. I did not really see what could possibly be different and all my other computers would continue to work just fine, including those used with WiFi too.

Many people say that your WiFi is bad or that you should change your WiFi Router... Or maybe when the laptop goes ...
