Attacks by ZmEu or w00tw00t robots

Who is ZmEu?

An image showing ZmeuThe name Zmeu (no capital E) is the name of a fantastic creature of Romania. There are so many stories that there isn't a clear understanding of what it is... but it is human like, can spit fire and wants to marry young women.

If you're wondering, it is generally a bad guy.

ZmEu Attack

Today, I noticed a lot of traffic on one of my servers. Looking into what was happening, I immediately found out that an attacker was looking for a loophole in that system. That attack was being performed from China.

My Embedded YouTube Video Disappeared

Embedded videos from YouTube.com used to work just fine on my website.

Today, though, I just noticed that my video was not showing up on one of my pages. Looking into it, I found out that the problem was the protocol.

I'm not too sure whether it was my browser or YouTube, com (although I'm not too sure how YouTube.com would know...) but the fact is that the iframe source was using HTTP and the page I was viewing used HTTPS.

By editing the page and changing the YouTube.com video from HTTP to HTTPS resolved the issue. It is generally much better to always use encryption anyway.

xhtml2pdf generating an error under 14.04+

Note: This bug is fixed in Ubuntu 16.04

Working on a website I have to convert invoices to PDF so end users have the ability to print and share the invoices from the website.

In order to do that, I generate an HTML page with the invoice which also gets displayed in the website, and then convert that HTML to PDF with xhtml2pdf. I use that tool instead of whtmltopdf because it does not require X11 to work. The other tool is said to require Qt and X11 and we do not want those things on our backend servers.

So... I upgraded to 14.04 and the tool stopped working with an ugly error:

Asymmetric Routing—reply via the correct Ethernet connection

I've been looking around every now and then to try to understand how I could create a server that replies on the correct Ethernet port.

The idea is simple, we have very powerful servers that can handle many requests, more requests that one Ethernet port can handle. In other words, we could have 2, 3, 4, probably even 10 Ethernet connections (it really depends on your application, of course: how much RAM you need, how much processing is necessary for each access, etc.)

The solution is to use the ip command line which allows us to add default gateways for each ethernet card based on the ...

mov eax,dword ptr fs:[0000000h]

As I was trying to debug a problem using an STL vector, I looked at the resulting assembly and saw this strange thing:

mov eax,dword ptr fs:[0000000h]

And a little further down, the opposite:

mov dword ptr fs:[0000000h],eax

These statements are from VC++ so the first is "put fs:[0] in eax" and the second is "save eax at fs:[0]".

Curious I looked around and found a page describing what's really hapenning. If you need to know, that's actually initializing the exception structure for this function. The fs:[0] location is where that structure pointer is saved ...

Compiling in 64bit with VC 2010 can result in a crashing software

Today, as I was trying to run a 64 bit application in Release mode under Windows 7, I got a crash about a NULL pointer. There is the debuggee (<- well known Microsoft spelling of Debugger) error window:

Unhandled exception in ... Access violation reading location 0x0000...

Unhandled exception at 0x52740ccf in guikeyboard_test_developer.exe:
0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x0000000000000000.

So... according to this error, the software access a NULL pointer. It took me some time, but the problem was not a NULL pointer, it was an unaligned memory access. In other words, it is trying to write a a pointer that is not 16 bytes aligned, which is ...

Comment spam attack from 109.230.213.100

Network connections

This morning I was attacked by a robot. I quickly noticed that my websites were slow and saw a pretty large amount of traffic on port 80: 208 connections!

InsertNode module for Drupal

This page is an extension to the InsertNode module available on Drupal.

I include here a set of files that one may be interested in to enhance the experience with that module.

If you have another file, let me know, and I might very well include it here (After reviewing the code!)

Thank you.
