No Meld Preferences Menu?!?!

In my development, once of the steps is to check the changes I made before I commit them.

To do so, I often use Meld.

Unfortunately, the preferences disappeared and it makes things harder to tweak large changes!

The fact is that my brain does not correctly support the Macintosh like Menu at the very top. (It's not just my brain, it's also the fact that when I move my mouse, it focuses windows automatically, which is the normal X-Windows behavior, and having the menus on the top is not acceptable in that case!)

You remove the menus at the top-right of the screen with:

Ever wondered how to verify the remote host fingerprint on SSH connect?

WARNING: This is actually wrong. The -F is a SEARCH feature. Not a way to recalculate the value on your own system. So you can verify that the value is the same in your database, but SSH already does that and shows you that terrible warning... so in effect it is the exact same command.

Whenever you connect to a computer with SSH, it gives you a fingerprint of the host.

Ever wondered how to check whether that fingerprint is a match? Yeah... I figured, 99% of us don't even know how to make sure that it is indeed a match.

There is the command line to generate that fingerprint:

systemd — got to learn that one now

systemd has come as the default boot loader since Ubuntu 15.04. The old version, upstart, is now considered deprecated. Systemd has an interface pretty similar to the upstart service command line.

Boot into the command line console in Ubuntu 16.04

As I just upgraded my 14.04 installation to 16.04, it booted right up to lightdm.

I had it properly setup to boot in a console before, but somehow it changed the behavior on me.

This is because the computer is now using systemd to boot.

I already had the GRUB variables setup as expected:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="text"
GRUB_TERMINAL=console

But this is not enough if you want to start in the console when running systemd (which is running since 15.04).

systemd has a list of variables you can tweak using the systemctl command. To boot in ...

Start remote process on my X11 computer without encryption, how do I do that?

Running X Tool from a Remote Connection

I have been using SSH to connect to my LAN network computers and make all sorts of changes to the machines running in a console and X tools. Works just fine.

Setup the SSH Tunnel

I actually setup the X set with two things:

1) setup the SSH server with:

X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10

Then restart the SSH server.

2) setup your client with a ~/.ssh/config file where you enter:

Host remote
  ForwardX11 yes

This is the equivalent to the -X command line option, without you having to remember to enter the option every ...

Remove the Keyboard Repeat in a VirtualBox console running Linux?

When I use virtualbox over the network (from a headless computer) and I connect using SSH, that virtualbox is going to be slow.

Somehow, I did not have that problem with older versions (Ubuntu 14.04 and older) but newer versions have required me to turn off keyboard repetition otherwise I get keys repeated (mainly the Enter key when something takes processing time at the time I hit the enter key) as in:

Heeeeeelllllooooo

The solution is to run the folloing command:

setterm -repeat off

It works in most terminals, for sure, the regular Linux console you get after installing a server in a ...

How to setup a Linux firewall

Introduction

If you setup a Linux box, you want to setup a firewall before you connect your computer to the Internet. If you are setting up a remote server, it should only have the SSH port open. Connect to it, setup the fire, then only install the other servers and open ports as required (and only ports that need to be connected from the outside.)

Any port that you open without the firewall already setup is at risk. You may want to install PHP and along will come a database which may open a port to the Internet. Something that you just don't want to happen.

Solaris virtual consoles are password protected, how to remove the protection?

Solaris 11.2 (Open SunOS really) has virtual console a la Linux. This works great. You can use the Alt-F1 to Alt-F6 keys to instantly switch between 6 different consoles. I use that to have one console with an editor and another with my make and runtime tests.

Unfortunately, Solaris includes a lock which manes that each time you switch between a console, it hides the content and ask you for your password to unlock the console (that way you could have multiple users on the same computer, each using a different console and the system remains safe since people cannot just go to someone's ...

X11 starts, but nothing appears on the screen...

Today I finally resolved a problem I had for a while on one of my computers.

When logging in using the normal lightdm X11 login screen, directly on the computer, I would get an error and absolutely no menu, no icons, no keyboard functionality, no unity, no nautilus... The only thing I had working was the background which gave me access to the settings, but nothing else. More or less, nothing useful.

I just had an idea and then I found a comment form a user on a forum who said that he just deleted his .config and .compiz directories and rebooted. After that it worked for him. It worked for me ...

xhtml2pdf generating an error under 14.04+

Note: This bug is fixed in Ubuntu 16.04

Working on a website I have to convert invoices to PDF so end users have the ability to print and share the invoices from the website.

In order to do that, I generate an HTML page with the invoice which also gets displayed in the website, and then convert that HTML to PDF with xhtml2pdf. I use that tool instead of whtmltopdf because it does not require X11 to work. The other tool is said to require Qt and X11 and we do not want those things on our backend servers.

So... I upgraded to 14.04 and the tool stopped working with an ugly error:
