AddThis weird behaviors

I just switched my websites from one server to another and noticed that on my main company site (http://www.m2osw.com) I would get a # at the end of the URL. Automatically added somehow. Thinking that could be a bad guy I checked the code and could not really see anything.

Hitting "Back" once, I noticed that the # would be transformed to #atssh-digg. I don't have anything specific about digg on that page except the AddThis button. That adds Digg among some 150 different systems where you can share my pages.

Do you know how to pronounce Linux?

Yes.

I have been around a lot of people and there are many who heard of Linux but to not know how to pronounce that word. I never thought it was complicated, that's a latin word, right?

So... maybe it is not "Lie neex"... Think about the "i" later and see how Italians, Spanish and French people pronounce it... Yes! The right way! You got it!

Anyway... for those in doubt, there is a file you can listen to:

Drupal SimpleMenu & Javascript errors

Somehow, once in a while, I just don't get my navigation menu at the top of my screen.

I use the Drupal SimpleMenu module. It works in most cases, yet you have to make sure that your theme include the print $closure before the closing body tag. Something like this:

    ...
    <?php print $closure; ?>
  </body>
</html>

This will print the simplemenu variable. It is a Javascript variable used to create the menu. It is an array tree with all the menus and sub-menus and their corresponding label and URL. Simple stuff... The author uses SuperFish to get everything ...

Twitter and emails

Today, I finally registered with Twitter. I'll be looking into a way to connect that to my blogs so each time I blog, I get a tweat eliminating the need for me to actually tweat for real.

Okay, that's fine, but guess what... they want me to verify my email address and it does not work.

OpenOffice Presenter

Already used OpenOffice? This is a free office suite just like Microsoft Office (or MS Office). It does not include absolutely everything, but it has most certainly a lot more than you need!

Drupal Module installed but not installed?!

Last night I found a problematic module... Specifically, it was XML Sitemap, but I do not think it was specific to that module.

The problem? I lost the XML Sitemap menu. I could not access it at all. So I decided to run the update.php code to see whether that would wake it up. Did not work. Then I tried going in the Modules list and disabling the modules. Did not work! Wow! I could not disable these modules!!! How weird...

Actions in Drupal, or should I say Rules?

I spent hours today to find this one module: Rules.

In most cases, you can set up a rule in Drupal with their Actions and Triggers and it will work just fine. The fact is that these options are extremely limited if you want any kind of condition on the Rule before triggering the action.

The idea is very simple:

1. Something happens

2. Check whether it is of interest1

3. Trigger the action

I needed that functionality for a couple of websites because I wanted to get an event whenever someone created a new page, but not for any type of ...

MO Paragraph trimmer filter test page

This page has empty paragraphs at the top (before this line), at the bottom and in between each paragraphs. In a way, this is a weird module!

It use the MO Paragraph trimmer filter1, written in PHP for Drupal 6.x, to remove all of those empty paragraphs. Sadly, there isn't a good way for you to check the page source, but you can test by posting a comment (I think...)

The idea ...

Taking a Screenshot on Mac OS/X

In order to take a screenshot on your Mac OS/X system, simply type "Apple-Shift-3". Then you will see an image on your Desktop. As far as I know you cannot control where the image will go.

There are many other combinaisons that let you select the part of the screen you want a screenshot of.

The name of the file on your dekstop is "Picture #.png" where # increases as required. Although since 10.4 you can change the file format with a Unix command.

LEFT JOIN not supported

Often, when you use LEFT JOIN, you will have one table and one comparison.

Whenever you need more than one comparison, they must be put between parenthesis, otherwise you get that silly error saying: LEFT JOIN are not supported.

So you need to write something like this:

SELECT *

FROM table

LEFT JOIN other

ON (table.f1 = other.f1 AND table.f2 = other.f2)

WHERE table.f3 = 'something'
