Recover name of message registered with RegisterWindowMessage()

Today I was confronted with an error in a process that would run in the background and slowly fill up the Windows message queue when it should have been dormant.

I looked at the messages that were being processed once the process woke up and the message number was 0xC10C or so. Nothing in the software has such a number. So I looked around and found out that the message was one of those created using the RegisterWindowMessage() function. (This is wrong in that application since the messages are never used from external applications, but oh well... that does not change the basic problem.)

Lost SSH key graphical prompt and auto-add to SSH agent

At some point in the past, my system somehow lost the ability to avoid asking me for my key every time I connect to one of my servers. It generally okay, I don't do so much work on that server that I'd have to connect all the time...

However, it is annoying when, once in while, I end up doing a lot of work, back and forth.

The ssh-agent was installed and working. I could add the key manually:

ssh-add ~/.ssh/my-secret-key
ssh-add -l

The ssh-add command allows you to add and remove keys from the ssh-agent. The -l command line option lists the keys currently held by the agent.

[ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

As I was working on a MS-Windows installation, I ran in this weird error: Data source not found and no default driver specified...

This was output when I was running the following in a command line prompt:

osql -E

The result should have been an MSSQL prompt instead!

The problem on the computer was that I uninstalled MSSQL 2005 that was automatically installed by Visual Studio C++ and was not compatible with our application, so I first uninstalled that but that uninstallation is really not proper. It leaves a LOT of things behind.

After that I installed MSSQL 2014 which was reported as ...

Adding a group for to a logged in Linux user

Once in a while I want to add my user to a group and then right away make use of that group.

Unfortunately, in general Unix kind of forces you to re-log in for the new group to be attached to your account.

However, a command has been added, a while back, to do just that on the fly. Not something you would want to use in a script, but at least, it works for me when doing a few things here and there.

In my case, I wanted to run QEMU, which I hadn't done in a while, and the system told me that it could not open the KVM, the error: kvm permission denied.

The problem was that I was not part ...

Bad move for PHP unpack()! So unpack() stopped working?

Today I noticed many errors on one of my websites. Looking closer into it, I noticed that the code for the mo_references Drupal module stopped working.

It took me some time, especially because the code seemed to work just fine as all the files could easily be displayed.

Actually, that was not the case. The unpack() character 'a', which I used, was transformed from a simple string that gets trimmed, to all the characters, including the NULL characters. Ouch! Now we have to use the 'Z' character instead.

I use it to unpack() a tar file by loading 512 bytes of data in a ...

Console color: dark blue on black unreadable

As I work in consoles every now and then, I run in that one problem:

Some text is written in Dark Blue over the Black background:

This is a good example of what I'm talking about.

And if you can read that text, wow! (without selecting it first.

So... how could you change the color of that blue to make it readable? There is a way by sending some escape command to the console:

echo -e "\\e]R\\e]PC6495ed"

That command changes the color of the blue to a light blue (somewhat "cyan", although not light cyan.)

The "\\e]R" part is to reset the colors to ...

Apache log says: client denied by server configuration

I work with Apache a lot. It is a really good web server that has many options and features. Unfortunately, maybe it has too many of them!

I ran in a problem where a notification from one server to another would fail with the following error:

[Fri Oct 11 19:43:50 2013] [error] [client 162.226.130.121] client denied by server configuration: <path to file>

Looking at the error, I was first thinking that my script was generating the error. The fact is that my script does not generate error 403. It has a 400 and 500 but not 403.

So looking at the error I thought, maybe that's an ...

Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10

I just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and my desktop was fully reset to the defaults. Rather annoying.

The worst part is that I tried to do things such as reassigning the Alt-F1 and Alt-F2 keys and it did not work. Somehow the default Gnome keys remained in effect!

I found the solution on Ask Ubuntu.

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings panel-main-menu "[]" # disable Alt+F1
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings panel-run-dialog "[]" # disable Alt-F2

Editing the preferences did not work at all.

Doxygen does not generate documentation for my C functions (or any global function)

As I write programs, mainly in C++, I document them using the Doxygen tool. This is a very powerful parser that is capable to finding functions, variables, macros, and many other things in the source code and attach the corresponding documentation to those functions, variables, macros, etc.

This is extremly practical when creating large projects or libraries that you want to share with others.

One problem though, by default it seems like global functions (and thus C functions) and variables do not make it to the documentation, when C++ classes work fine.

There are two potential issues:

Upgrading Ubuntu to use NVidia

IMPORTANT NOTE

These are instructions for Ubuntu 10.10 and these worked in Ubuntu 12.10 (which I have now). It may break in the future though.

I generally install my Ubuntu systems using the Server version of Ubuntu because it tends to works a lot better. The result is that I don't get all the Desktop features installed by the installer. That prevents me from installing the NVidia driver automatically.

The newest drives for X.org make use of some source for the client-side driver and that requires you to install the linux source code and headers. I'm wondering if each time we ...
