boot

Boot into the command line console in Ubuntu 16.04

As I just upgraded my 14.04 installation to 16.04, it booted right up to lightdm.

I had it properly setup to boot in a console before, but somehow it changed the behavior on me.

This is because the computer is now using systemd to boot.

I already had the GRUB variables setup as expected:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="text"
GRUB_TERMINAL=console

But this is not enough if you want to start in the console when running systemd (which is running since 15.04).

systemd has a list of variables you can tweak using the systemctl command. To boot in ...

Supermicro X9SCI/X9SCA, video is gone!

As I am still trying to get my computers to work with a dual seat (or multiseat), I did an attempt in using the onboard video (a relatively decent Matrox card.) So I went in the BIOS and changed the setup for the video from Offboard to Onboard. Big mistake!

The video stopped working. On reboot the computer beeped 8 times and booted the OS normally (I have SSH setup so I could access the computer, but absolutely no video on either port: on board and off board.)

I have a Supermicro X9SCI/X9SCA. Searching for "no video" or "missing video on boot"... returned nothing ...

Large scale Linux console

As I am working on our Snap! C++ CMS, I created a set of virtual systems to test the compilation on "clean" system (yeah! my main computers has all sorts of things that I don't even know about...)

In those virtual system, I only install the basic server and then do a sudo apt-get install of anything else the server needs to get compiled. This includes libraries such as libmagic, boost, and Qt and some tools like xmllint. This is pretty cool, but when working in a console, and that console is very small, it makes it a bit difficult, so I looked into making it big.

For this ...

Ubuntu: Network Manager says it is unmanaged (according to state file)

I just received my new D-Link USB wireless dongle to connect my Linux system to my wireless network...

I looked like it was detected as the device was flash and lsmod showed all sorts of USB entries as expected (with the correct device number, something like 2800.)

But the thing would not connect.

Looking at the log I had a message saying "networking is disabled by state file". This came from the Network Manager which was indeed disabled! Editing the following file:

/var/lib/NetworkManager.state

and changing the NetworkingEnabled variable from false to true made everything ...

Quintuple Boot

How to install your system to be able to boot from any Operating System

Problems

Problems with booting... numerous emails & posts about this one, that's for sure!!! Real solutions? Not really... In many cases people end up reinstalling their system from Scratch and once in a while even that doesn't work! But smart people have a way to fix their boot sectors without too much hurdle (instead of the hours it takes to install an OS.)

Yes! There ought to be a reason for things not to work so well once in while. In most cases, if you only have proper ...

GRUB error 16

[vtoc title=Boot Sector; minlevel=1; maxlevel=4;]

Error 16

Today I got an error 16 with GRUB on one of my machines. This had happened before so I did not worry too much. It is just quite annoying.

Ubuntu CD

A Ubuntu boot CD has a cool feature one can use to rescue such a system (i.e. re-install GRUB properly.) More or less, boot the CD, select the rescue mode, let it do its things for a moment (after you select options like keyboard, etc.)

The pivot_root error

The Error: pivot_root not found

Debian or Ubuntu and pivot_root and GRUB and hard drives... In general, I like Linux, but once in a while, it generates quite a few problems!

Fox Trot by Bill Amend

Long description of the Fox Trot story of Bill Amend:

Fox Trot by Bill Amend

Fox Trot and his friend are right next to Fox Trot's mom.

The mom looks at them, pausing from reading her magazine and says:

— I thought I told you to go play outside.

Fox Trot replied, making gestures with his hands:

— We tried! It's boring! There is nothing fun to do out there!

The mom goes back to her magazine and says:

— Use your imagination. I'm sure you can come up with something.

Fox Trot is stunned.

Having to comply, Fox Trot and his friend walk out. Sitting in the grass in the backyard, Fox Trot ...
