  • How it works

    The at command is often used to start a process at a later time. It can run any script at a specified date and time.

    For instance, if you want the computer to send you a signal in one hour, use something like:

    cat signal | at -q z now + 60 minutes

    Assuming that the file named signal contains the commands necessary to generate the signal. Then in 60 minutes, the script will be execute and the signal will be heard or shown.

  • Since my last upgrade, I had many small things that went awry on my computer. From tsearch2 in a Postgres database to ownership of files to the following authentication problem:

    root@mycomputer:~# su - www-data
    su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info
    (Ignored)
    www-data@mycomputer:~$

    Note that with su it ignores the fact. With cron it was not being ignored, so I'd get no work done!

  • GIT

    Drupal now offers git to access its source code and 3rd party modules, themes, etc.

    The GIT system is interesting but it has a huge difference between the CVS and SVN scheme: it requires an action, such as commit, and a push. The push is what synchronize your copy with the repository. Without the push, all the actions you've been taking will have no effect (they only are on your hard drive.)

    As you will see in each project, there is a Version Control tab at the top. Clicking on it gives you most of the instructions you need to know to work with Drupal git. I will not repeat them here. The only two things I often do is commit + push and tagging (to create new official versions.)

  • I found a different way which is to use the:
    Local Network or Host-only Network on your Virtual Machine

    Today I did my first full install of Snap on a VM in my Ubuntu development system that runs VirtualBox.

    This took me about 1h between getting all the files ready from our own APT repository, and then finding out all the setups needed (we have a few working installations, but we added all the necessary magic with time and did not clearly document all the steps yet... argh! so much to do!)

    At some point, I wanted to setup the "domains" and "websites" tables on the VM. ...

  • Problem

    I had a problem with my CuteMenu1 module and tried many times to fix it but just could not find the problem with Internet Explorer.

    The fact is that I created dropdowns that are supposed to be full width, but that did not work, somehow.

    I wanted each item to have a pre-defined height. So in the style for my DIV I wrote this:

    [toc hidden:1]
    • 1. This is a Drupal module. You happen to have Drupal? Download CuteMenu now then!
  • When creating objects (commonly called JavaScript classes) in your JavaScript code, you want to use the prototype. This is the only clean way of doing it. In JavaScript, you can create objects on the fly, but those are not considered safe.

    Quick and Dirty

    The quick way is to create an object directly. This works, but it has potential problems with used against a powerful optimized such as the Google Closure Compiler.

    All the Quick and Dirty examples can make use of this in their myFunc examples. However, the closure compiler will warning about all of them because it doesn't know for ...

  • Network connections

    This morning I was attacked by a robot. I quickly noticed that my websites were slow and saw a pretty large amount of traffic on port 80: 208 connections!

  • On my sites, I'm using boost to allow much faster access time (close to instantaneous in comparison to hitting Drupal and all the database accesses...)

    The result is great! But it generates some problems when you test a page. It does not get refreshed... Easy, you can clear the cache. Not advisable when your cache is around 10,000 files. A better way, is to go to that page and click on "Flush Page" (available in one of the blocks offered by boost.)

  • Today I finally found out how to fix the path of the forums.

    The name of the vocabulary is "Forums". To access it as expected in pathauto, you use [vocab-raw].

    The result of [vocab-raw] is "forums" (all lowercase.)

    Then, by default, pathauto adds the list of categories to the path. This is done using the [catpath-raw]. Say you have a forum named "Linux Stuff", [catpath-raw] will return "Linux Stuff" as is. This makes sense because paths on Linux are case sensitive (actually, it's the same thing with Apache wherever you are using it, although it's a

  • Somehow, once in a while, I just don't get my navigation menu at the top of my screen.

    I use the Drupal SimpleMenu module. It works in most cases, yet you have to make sure that your theme include the print $closure before the closing body tag. Something like this:

        ...
        <?php print $closure; ?>
      </body>
    </html>

    This will print the simplemenu variable. It is a Javascript variable used to create the menu. It is an array tree with all the menus and sub-menus and their corresponding label and URL. Simple stuff... The author uses SuperFish to get everything ...
