  • As we are upgrading our server to jump from version 12.04 to 13.04, we encounter a few problems.

Two with Postfix, first the Postgrey port has changed. It was 60000 before, now it is 10023. Don't ask me... Anyway, that was the easy one.

The other problem was a relay error. I could send emails all I wanted, but not my partner who does not show his server as part of our Made to Order Software Corp. network. Relay is why a computer allows emails from server X to be sent to server Y through server Z. You are server Z, that's the relay.

The fact is that if you can log in your account on ...

  • How to install your system to be able to boot from any Operating System

    Problems

Problems with booting... numerous emails & posts about this one, that's for sure!!! Real solutions? Not really... In many cases people end up reinstalling their system from Scratch and once in a while even that doesn't work! But smart people have a way to fix their boot sectors without too much hurdle (instead of the hours it takes to install an OS.)

Yes! There ought to be a reason for things not to work so well once in while. In most cases, if you only have proper ...

  • To read files out of your repository via SSH, set your CVSROOT variable to something like this:

    export CVSROOT=":ext:login-name@host//cvs/path/root"

What tells CVSROOT that it will get the data from an external host is the <em>:ext:</em> at the start of the URL.

The <em>login-name</em> is your name or whoever's login name you can use to connect to the computer.

It is assumed that you can already connect with SSH.

  • I got a cross over CAT6 cable and somehow the computers on which I used it do not like it... So I thought maybe it was not a valid crossover cable. Searching on the net I found a page with the following images which gave me the answer. You have to look for the colors of the wires in the RJ45. It's not very easy to see, but it is different enough (assuming you see colors...) that you should be able to tell exactly.

The easiest is simply to look for the "red" (orange) cable. If it is close to the edge in one RJ45 and far from the edge on the other, then you have a crossover ...

  • I have different scripts that synchronize different hard drives for either backup or just synch-ing my development system with one of the production systems.

I got an error for a little while after I created a folder on a destination as I wanted to make sure that the source folder was being copied...

That generated an error as follow:

rsync: delete_file: rmdir "<destination>" failed: Directory not empty (39)
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(977) [sender=2.6.9]

The fact is that the source file was a softlink and not a folder. So ...

  • If you are using a folder much, then you can create a substitute using the subst command in a shell. This command will assign a path to the given letter and the result is something which looks like you had an additional hard drive.

  • The Error: pivot_root not found

Debian or Ubuntu and pivot_root and GRUB and hard drives... In general, I like Linux, but once in a while, it generates quite a few problems!

  • Today we discovered that our SSL system on our server broke when we upgraded the server to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid.)

The technical error message is rather cryptic:

      SSL connect error; error:140773F2:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 ...
              ... alert unexpected message (https://secure.example.com/path.php)

I also get this message from HttpRequest (in our PHP server running with Apache):

  • As FCKeditor becomes old and the new CKEditor is started to get there, I'm updating more and more websites to make use of the newer version of CKEditor. This requires a few steps to make sure you don't lose the previous functionality.

    Permissions

The update does not transfer the FCKeditor permissions to the CKEditor. This is because by the time you install the new CKEditor, the FCKeditor should already be uninstalled. In other words, those permissions are gone already. Plus, the scheme is slightly different in the new editor.

    Roles

The list of roles who are assigned one ...

  • After a little while (very little) our mail server gets quite clogged. It does not cause much problem to our server, however, legal mail server will have a hard time to connect because all of those illegal mail server connect thousands of times to try sending us spam.

To give you an example, I blocked less than 10 IPs today and I got over 5,000 hits blocked within about 12 hours. That's to give you a picture of the badness of those scam robots.

I thus looked for a solution to automatically block those IPs. I found two things, one is a shell script. I do not recommend it since it is ...
